The Home Energy Score, developed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and its national laboratories, provides homeowners, buyers and sellers credible information about a home’s energy use. The Home Energy Score is based on a standard assessment of energy-related assets to easily compare energy use across the housing market – similar to a miles-per-gallon rating for a car.

The Home Energy Score Report estimates home energy use, associated costs as well as provides energy solutions to cost-effectively improve the home's efficiency. The Home Energy Score is shown on a simple one-to-10 scale, with a 10 given to the  most efficient homes.

Several cities across the U.S. have passed mandatory and voluntary policies for a Home Energy Assessment and Score prior to the sale of a home, as a way to help consumers make a better-informed decision when purchasing a home.
